What is Deep Cleaning?

Deep cleaning — clinically known as scaling and root planing — is a non-surgical treatment for gum disease (periodontitis). It goes beyond a routine clean to remove hardened plaque and tartar that has built up beneath the gum line, and smooths the root surfaces to help the gums reattach to the teeth.

Why it may be needed

  • Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
  • Gum recession or pockets forming around teeth
  • Tartar build-up below the gum line
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Early or moderate periodontitis diagnosis

After your treatment

Some tenderness and sensitivity for a few days is normal. See our Deep Cleaning Aftercare Guide for full recovery instructions.

What to Expect

1
Assessment

We measure the depth of gum pockets around each tooth and take X-rays to assess bone levels.

2
Anaesthesia

Local anaesthetic is applied to keep you comfortable throughout.

3
Scaling

Specialised instruments remove hardened tartar above and below the gum line.

4
Root planing

The root surfaces are smoothed to remove bacterial deposits and help gums heal and reattach.

5
Review appointment

A follow-up visit confirms healing and assesses whether further treatment is needed.

Most patients require two visits — one for each half of the mouth — allowing each side to be treated thoroughly and comfortably.
Yes. Periodontal maintenance visits every 3–4 months are strongly recommended after deep cleaning to prevent gum disease from returning.
Consistent brushing, daily flossing, and regular dental check-ups every 6 months are the most effective prevention. Stopping smoking also significantly reduces risk.
