  • Severe toothache that is not controlled by pain relief
  • Swelling of the face, jaw, neck or gum
  • A knocked-out or broken tooth
  • Bleeding that does not stop after 45 minutes of pressure

Go to the Emergency Department If You Have

Go to hospital immediately if you experience

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing — this can indicate a spreading infection
  • Severe facial swelling that is closing your eye or affecting your airway
  • Fever with significant facial swelling — signs of a serious infection
  • Trauma to the face or jaw with suspected fracture
  • Uncontrolled bleeding that is not responding to pressure

What to Do Before You Reach Us

Knocked-Out Tooth

Hold by the crown (not root). Rinse gently. Try to reinsert in socket. If not possible, store in milk or between cheek and gum. Call us immediately — time is critical.

Swelling

Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek — 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off. Do not apply heat. Call us as soon as possible.

Toothache

Rinse with warm salt water. Take over-the-counter pain relief. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum — it can cause a chemical burn. Call us promptly.

Lost Filling or Crown

Keep the area clean. Dental wax or sugar-free gum can temporarily cover a sharp edge. Call us to arrange a prompt repair appointment.
